What Is Domain Locking?

Domain locking is a security feature that helps prevent unauthorised transfers or changes to a domain name.

When a domain is locked, it is harder for the domain to be transferred away without permission. Depending on the domain type, locking may also help prevent certain changes to the domain’s contact details or nameservers.

In most cases, it is sensible to keep domain locking enabled unless you need to make a change that requires the domain to be unlocked.

You may need to unlock a domain if you are:

  • Transferring it to another provider.
  • Making a change that the registry or registrar requires the domain to be unlocked for.
  • Following specific instructions from support.

To check the lock status of a domain:

  1. Log in to the client area at https://clients.4uhosting.co.uk.
  2. Choose Domains.
  3. Find the domain and select Manage.
  4. Look for Registrar Lock or the lock option shown for that domain.

UK domains work differently from many generic domains and may not show a registrar lock option. If you are unsure whether a domain can be locked or unlocked, contact support before making changes.
