What Is Bandwidth?

Bandwidth is the amount of data transferred between your hosting account and its visitors or users.

For a website, bandwidth is used when someone loads pages, images, downloads or other files from your site. Larger files use more bandwidth than small text pages.

Bandwidth can also be used by other services on the hosting account, such as email or FTP. For example, sending large email attachments or uploading files by FTP can add to the amount of data transferred.

Common things that increase bandwidth usage include:

  • More visitors.
  • Large images or videos.
  • File downloads.
  • Email attachments.
  • Bots or unwanted traffic.
  • Repeated failed requests or errors.

If bandwidth usage is higher than expected, check your website statistics, file sizes and recent traffic patterns. If you are not sure what is causing the usage, contact support and we can help you investigate.
