Depending on the domain extension and registry, a lookup may show details such as:

- The domain status
- Registration and expiry dates
- Nameservers
- Limited registrant or contact information
In the past, WHOIS often showed more personal contact details. This has changed significantly because of privacy rules and newer registration-data systems such as RDAP.
For many domains, personal registrant details are now hidden from public lookup results. Business or technical information may still be visible depending on the domain type, registrar and registry rules.
