WordPress uses user roles to control what each person can do on a website.
The standard WordPress roles are:
- Administrator: can manage the whole site, including settings, themes, plugins and users.
- Editor: can publish and manage posts, including posts written by other users.
- Author: can publish and manage their own posts.
- Contributor: can write and manage their own posts, but cannot publish them.
- Subscriber: can manage their own profile.
On a WordPress multisite network, there is also a Super Admin role. This role can manage the whole network of sites.
To change a user’s role:
- Log in to your WordPress admin area.
- Go to Users.
- Select All Users.
- Tick the user you want to change.
- Choose the new role from the Change role to menu.
- Select Change.
Only give users the level of access they need. Administrator access should be limited to people you trust to manage the whole site.
