How to Use File Manager in cPanel

Open Your Website Files

  1. Go to Files > File Manager.
  2. Open public_html.
  3. Open the folder for the website or domain you want to edit.

Upload a File

  1. Open the folder where the file should go.
  2. Click Upload.
  3. Click Select File or drag the file into the upload area.
  4. Wait until the upload reaches 100%.
  5. Click Go Back to return to File Manager.

Create a New File or Folder

  1. Open the folder where the new item should go.
  2. Click + File or + Folder.
  3. Enter the name.
  4. Confirm the location.
  5. Click Create New File or Create New Folder.

Edit a File

  1. Select the file.
  2. Click Edit.
  3. Confirm the character encoding if cPanel asks.
  4. Make your changes.
  5. Click Save Changes.
  6. Click Close when you are finished.

Rename a File or Folder

  1. Select the item.
  2. Click Rename.
  3. Enter the new name.
  4. Click Rename File.

Move or Copy Files

  1. Select the file or folder.
  2. Click Move or Copy.
  3. Enter the destination path.
  4. Click Move File(s) or Copy File(s).

Delete a File or Folder

  1. Select the item.
  2. Click Delete.
  3. Choose whether to skip the trash if that option appears.
  4. Click Confirm.

Restore a Deleted File

  1. Click View Trash.
  2. Select the file or folder.
  3. Click Restore.
  4. Confirm the restore.

Notes

  • Files for most websites live in public_html.
  • Download a copy before editing important files.
  • Do not edit files inside a Git repository unless you know how the repository is managed.
