Please take care when ordering a UK domain name.
UK domain names require legal registrant information when the order is placed. It is important to enter this correctly, because changing the legal registrant later may require a Nominet registrant transfer.
Nominet currently lists the registrant transfer fee at £10 + VAT. Please check with us before making a legal registrant change, in case the process or fee has changed.
UK Registrant Types
UK domains can use several legal registrant types, including:
- Individual
- UK Limited Company
- UK PLC
- UK Partnership
- UK LLP
- Sole Trader
- UK Registered Charity
- UK Entity (other)
- Foreign Organisation
- Other Foreign Organisation
In most cases, you will register a domain as an Individual, Sole Trader, or Limited Company.
If You Are Registering as an Individual
Enter the real legal name of the person the domain is being registered for in the Registrant Name field.
Do not enter anything in the Company ID field.
Registrant details for UK and EU customers are normally hidden from public lookup results because of GDPR and modern registry privacy rules.
If You Are Registering as a Sole Trader
Enter the real legal name of the person the domain is being registered for in the Registrant Name field.
Do not enter anything in the Company ID field.
If You Are Registering as a Limited Company, PLC, or LLP
Enter the registered company name in the Registrant Name field.
Enter the registered company number in the Company ID field.
If the company number is missing or incorrect, the registration may be rejected.
If You Are Registering as a Registered Charity
Enter the registered charity name in the Registrant Name field.
Enter the registered charity number in the Company ID field.
If the charity number is missing or incorrect, the registration may be rejected.
Other Registrant Types
For UK Entity (other), Foreign Organisation, and Other Foreign Organisation, enter the entity or organisation name in the Registrant Name field.
Do not enter anything in the Company ID field unless the order form specifically asks for it.
.ltd.uk Domains
.ltd.uk domains are reserved for limited companies.
The domain must match the registered company name exactly. These registrations are checked against Companies House.
For example, a company called Example Limited could register example.ltd.uk, but it could not register examplehosting.ltd.uk unless that matched the registered company name.
Important
UK domain rules are strict.
The registration may fail if:
- You choose the wrong registrant type.
- You enter a company or charity number when it is not needed.
- You leave out a company or charity number when it is required.
- The legal registrant name does not match the selected registrant type.
If you are unsure which registrant type to choose, contact us before placing the order.
