Resize an Image in WordPress

You can resize an image in WordPress from the page or post editor.

This changes how the image appears on the page. It does not always reduce the size of the original image file that was uploaded to WordPress.

  1. Log in to your WordPress admin area.
  2. Open Pages or Posts.
  3. Edit the page or post that contains the image.
  4. Click the image you want to resize.
  5. Open the block settings panel if it is not already visible.
  6. Adjust the image width, height or resolution settings.
  7. Save or update the page.

In most cases, it is best to change the width and let WordPress keep the height in proportion. Setting a fixed height can crop or distort the image, depending on the block and theme settings.

If you want to show a smaller version of the image, choose a smaller image resolution such as medium or large instead of full size, where that option is available.

If the uploaded image itself is too large, resizing it in the editor may not be enough. You may need to scale or optimise the image before uploading it or edit it from the WordPress Media Library.
