Firstly, welcome to 4UHosting and thank you for your business! This document is a getting started guide for customers that have signed up for hosting services with us.
As part of the order process you will have been sent an email entitled New Hosting Account Information. This email contains your hosting login information which you will need in order to upload files and manage your hosting account and email. If you haven't yet received this email then your hosting account won't have been set up yet. If you placed your order outside of normal business hours, your account may not be set up until the next morning. If you think the email may not have been delivered, you can check your Email Archive inside your account area. All the email we send to you is stored in your account so you can refer to it later. If you dont receive the details either via email within 24 hours, contact us via the helpdesk and we will investigate.
Note: your customer account login on our website is your email address and is separate from your hosting (cPanel) account login. To make sure that your hosting account is ready, simply try to navigate to your website in your browser by entering it into in the address bar...
NOTE: Throughout this guide we refer to exampledomain4u.co.uk. This is a representation of your own domain name. Wherever you see exampledomain4u.co.uk you should replace it with the registered domain that applies to you. Once you have entered your web site address into your browser you should see a blank page with the text at the top "Index of". This means that your domain is registered and your hosting account has been created successfully.
If your domain is registered elswhere and you are switching to our service, you will need to have the nameservers changed to ours. Contact your domain registrar and ask them to change the nameservers for your domain to...
If you have registered a new domain with us and you can't see the "index of" page, contact us via the helpdesk and we will investigate.
If you are transferring a domain to us, we always advise that you change the nameservers on your domain before initiating the transfer. If you are transferring a .co.uk .me.uk .org.uk or .ltd.uk to us, you must contact your previous provider and have the Registrar Tag changed on your domain to our tag, which is 4UH. Please see our Transferring Domains guide for more details.
Now that your domain and hosting are up and running there are three basic tasks you will want to perform...
1. Setting up email addresses in cPanel.
2. Configuring your email software to send and receive your email.
3. Uploading your web site.
To create your email accounts you need to login to your cPanel interface. The email we sent you with your hosting details contained your cPanel / FTP login information.
In your browser navigate to...
http://www.exampledomain4u.co.uk/cpanel (remember that you should replace "exampledomain4u.co.uk" with your own domain name). This is the address you will always use to login to cPanel. It will prompt you for your login username and password. Enter the details you were provided with in the email we sent you. Once logged in you will see a number of sections containing icons. Clicking the icons will take you to the page for that particular feature or function.

Configuring your email software
Once you have created your email addresses you can then configure them in your email software. The Email section of this knowledge base deals with email and has tutorials that cover setting up the most popular email software.

You will be asked for a username and password. You should enter the full email address as the username and enter the password you chose for that email address when you created it.
Uploading your website
There are many different ways to design a website, the method you choose can be influenced by many things and there are lots of products on the market that can help you build web pages or whole sites. We cannot help you design your web pages but we can help you get them onto the web. In all cases, you will fit into one of four categories...
1. You have designed your site and have the files and folders ready to upload. Or someone else is taking care of the site design and uploading for you.
2. You are using a third party application that uses a built in FTP client to upload your files. Examples of this are Adobe Dreamweaver and Serif Web Plus.
3. You will be using our own site builder software included in the cPanel interface.
4. You are using a Web Application such as Wordpress or Joomla, or an E-commerce App such as Magento.
If you fit into category 1 above, you simply need to upload your files and folders to your web space. This is covered in the article uploading your site files in the Web Hosting section of this knowledge base. If someone else is doing it for you, give them your cPanel / FTP username and password.
If you fit into category 2 above, then you need your FTP login information. The username and password are the same as your cpanel login. In addition to those, you will need the following information...
Your software will ask you for your FTP host name which is simply your domain name i.e exampledomain4u.co.uk without any "http" or "www" prefix.
The folder or "directory" that will contain your site files is called public_html. This is very important because your software needs to know where to put the files. If you dont specify the site folder, sometimes known as the document root folder, your software will upload the files to the wrong place and your site will not display. In Dreamweaver for example, you are asked to specify the "host directory". Simply enter public_html into that box.
