What is an Addon Domain

An addon domain is simply another independent domain running from your web hosting. All our UK Web Hosting plans come with these, allowing you to have additional web sites running from your web space. Addon domains come with their own email, forwarders etc too.

In a nutshell, an addon domain is a pointer - it points a domain name to a folder on your main account structure. Here is a simple example...

You purchase a UK Web Hosting plan with the domain name "supermegawidgets.com". This is your main hosting account where you run your online business.

You also want to run a second, totally different website for your stamp collecting hobby "supermegastamps.net". You want to have your own email addresses at this domain and possibly even run a discussion forum on the site. This is where your Addon domains come in.

To set up this second domain it must first be registered as normal and set to our nameservers. You would need to purchase the domain. If you register it with us, it will appear in your account area as a normal domain purchase. Addon domains don't show in your customer account as being associated with hosting.

To add the domain to your hosting package, you would simply use the "Addon Domains" feature in your cPanel control panel. Instructions for doing this are available in this knowledge base

During the process of setting this up, you are asked to choose a subdomain / username. This is used as the folder to place your site files in.

To upload your files, simply login to FTP as normal and navigate to your public_html folder as you would for your main site. You will notice a folder with the name you chose - simply place your site files in that folder.
