Visitors do not see an error page. Search engines are sent somewhere that still exists. On the surface, it looks like a sensible catch-all. In practice, redirecting every 404 page to the homepage is usually a bad idea.

It can confuse visitors

If someone clicks a link expecting a specific product, guide, service page or blog post, they expect to land somewhere relevant. If they are suddenly sent to the homepage with no explanation, the experience can be confusing.

They may assume the site is broken, the content has disappeared or they clicked the wrong link. Some will try searching again, but many will simply leave.

A redirect should help the visitor continue to something useful. Sending them to a generic page rarely does that.

It can send poor signals to search engines

Search engines use redirects to understand where content has moved. If an old URL is redirected to a closely related replacement, that is helpful. If lots of unrelated missing URLs are all redirected to the homepage, the signal becomes much less useful.

In some cases, broad homepage redirects can be treated as soft 404s. In plain English, that means the page technically redirects, but search engines may still interpret it as a missing or unhelpful result.

That is not the outcome most site owners are hoping for.

Redirects should be relevant

The best redirect is the one that takes the visitor to the closest available replacement. If an old service page has been replaced by a newer version, redirect to the new service page. If a product has been discontinued but there is a similar alternative, redirect to that.

If a blog post has been merged into a newer guide, redirect to the guide. The common thread is relevance. The new page should satisfy the same or a very similar intent.

Sometimes a 404 is the right answer

Not every missing page needs a redirect. If the old content has no useful replacement, a proper 404 page is often more honest and more useful than a forced redirect.

It tells the visitor the page is no longer available and gives them options for what to do next. That might include links to popular pages, a site search box, category links, contact details or a short message explaining that the page may have moved.

A helpful 404 page is not a failure. It is part of good website maintenance.

Avoid redirect chains

Another common issue is allowing redirects to pile up over time. Page A redirects to Page B, which redirects to Page C, which eventually lands on the current page.

Redirect chains can slow things down and make maintenance harder. Where possible, old URLs should redirect directly to the final destination. This is especially important after redesigns, domain changes or large content clean-ups.

Check broken links regularly

Missing pages are easier to deal with when you review them regularly.

Use analytics, crawl tools or your website platform to look for common 404s, broken internal links and old URLs still receiving visits. Internal broken links should usually be fixed at the source rather than simply redirected.

External links are different. If another website links to an old URL, a relevant redirect can help preserve the visitor path from that link.

Make your 404 page useful

A good 404 page should be clear, calm and helpful. It does not need to be clever. It needs to help people recover.

That usually means a short explanation that the page could not be found, a search box, links to main sections of the website, a link back to the homepage and contact details if the visitor needs help.

That is far better than silently dumping everyone on the homepage.

Redirects are powerful when they are used carefully. The aim is not to hide every missing page. It is to guide people and search engines to the most relevant place. If there is no relevant place, a clear and useful 404 page is often the better option.

Redirecting every missing page to your homepage may seem tidy, but it can confuse visitors and weaken your website’s structure.

[35,34

post-1755","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-seo","category-web-design
["GET
