At its best, it is simply the process of bringing genuine local relationships online.

If you run a local business, you probably already know suppliers, customers, charities, venues, trade groups and neighbouring companies. Some of those relationships may naturally lead to useful links, mentions or directory listings that help people discover your business.

The important word is “naturally”. Local link building should be about relevance and trust, not chasing any link you can find.

1. Start with businesses you already know

Make a list of local businesses and organisations you already have a real relationship with. This might include suppliers, accountants, photographers, venues, printers, tradespeople, wholesalers, charities, event organisers or businesses that serve a similar audience without competing directly.

Look for sensible opportunities. Could they list you as a trusted supplier? Could you be included on a partners page? Could you contribute a short case study or provide a testimonial?

The strongest local links often come from relationships that already exist offline. It is usually much easier to ask someone who knows your business than to send cold emails to strangers.

2. Use proper local directories and business groups

Not every directory is worth your time. A page full of random businesses from all over the country is unlikely to do much for you.

Good local directories can still be useful though. Prioritise listings that real customers might use: local chambers of commerce, trade associations, town or city business directories, tourism websites, local event directories, sector-specific directories and reputable review platforms.

Keep your business name, address, phone number and website consistent. These local citations matter even where there is no clickable link. Inaccurate listings can confuse customers, especially if old phone numbers or addresses are still floating around online.

3. Sponsor or support local activity

Local sponsorship can create visibility, goodwill and relevant mentions.

You might support a community event, sports team, charity fundraiser, school project, local festival, business meetup or industry awards. In many cases, the organiser will thank sponsors on their website and link to them.

This only works well when the connection makes sense. Choose causes or events that fit your values, your location or your customer base. A small but genuine local sponsorship is usually more valuable than a random link from an unrelated website.

4. Create something useful for your area

Useful local content can attract links because it helps people.

An estate agent could publish a guide to moving into the area. A wedding supplier could create a list of local venues. A restaurant could maintain a guide to nearby attractions. A professional services company could explain local regulations or common questions for businesses in the area.

The aim is not to create a thin page stuffed with place names. The aim is to produce something genuinely useful enough that other local websites may want to reference it.

5. Offer testimonials where they are deserved

If you use a local supplier and they do a good job, send them a thoughtful testimonial.

Many businesses publish testimonials on their websites, often with the reviewer’s name and company. If appropriate, you can ask whether they would be happy to include a link back to your website.

Do this honestly. A testimonial should be given because you genuinely recommend the company, not because you are trying to trade compliments.

6. Do not ignore reviews and profiles

Local SEO is not only about links. Reviews, accurate listings, a complete Google Business Profile, strong website content and mentions from trusted local sites all work together.

If your business is listed in several places, check that the details match. If customers are leaving reviews, respond properly. These small jobs are not glamorous, but they help build the sort of local presence search engines and real customers can understand.

If a link would make sense to a real local customer, it is probably worth pursuing. If it only exists to impress a search engine, it is probably best left alone.

Local link building is about earning useful mentions from real businesses, organisations and community websites.
