What IPv4 and IPv6 Mean for Website Owners

Every website depends on addresses behind the scenes.

Visitors type a domain name because it is easy to remember, but computers need numerical addresses to find the right server. That is where IP addresses come in.

The two main versions you will hear about are IPv4 and IPv6.

What is IPv4?

IPv4 is the older and still widely used internet addressing system.

An IPv4 address looks like four groups of numbers, such as 192.0.2.10. For many years, IPv4 carried the public internet. The problem is that there are only so many possible IPv4 addresses and demand has grown far beyond what anyone expected when the system was created.

That shortage is what people mean when they talk about IPv4 exhaustion.

What is IPv6?

IPv6 is the newer addressing system designed to provide a vastly larger pool of addresses.

IPv6 addresses look different, using letters and numbers separated by colons. They are longer, but they solve a practical problem: the internet needs enough addresses for websites, devices, networks, cloud platforms and everything else that connects online.

IPv6 also includes technical improvements, although most website owners mainly need to understand the capacity benefit.

Does your domain name change?

No.

Your domain name remains the human-friendly address people use. DNS records connect that domain name to the right server address, whether that is IPv4, IPv6 or both.

For example, an A record points a domain to an IPv4 address, while an AAAA record points it to an IPv6 address.

Does your website need IPv6?

Many websites still work perfectly well with IPv4, but IPv6 support is increasingly part of a modern hosting and network setup.

You do not usually need to manage this manually unless you are responsible for DNS or server configuration. Your web host or DNS provider should be able to explain what is supported and which records are needed.

Why should website owners care?

Most visitors will never think about IP versions, but reliability matters.

If a hosting platform, DNS setup or network configuration is poorly managed, visitors may have trouble reaching a website. Understanding the basic relationship between domain names, DNS and IP addresses helps you ask better questions when something changes.

It is also useful when moving hosting, configuring DNS records or troubleshooting connectivity.

Keep the practical view

IPv4 and IPv6 can become very technical very quickly.

For most website owners, the key points are simple: your domain name points to server addresses through DNS, IPv4 addresses are limited, IPv6 expands the available address space and your hosting provider should manage the details clearly.

You do not need to become a network engineer to run a website, but a little context can make the internet feel less mysterious.
